Midjourney Masterclass: Key Differences Between Character and Style Reference

In the field of digital content creation, we often encounter the need to create a consistent series of images with a similar style or subject. The key parameters for defining the look and feel of the created content are “Character Reference” (‐‐cref) and “Style Reference” (‐‐sref). Character Reference focuses on specific details and features, whereas Style Reference focuses on the aesthetics and artistic style that is applied to the image. In this article, we will explain in detail how to upload a reference image, what these parameters mean, how to use them correctly, and how to amplify the weight of the chosen parameters.

First of all, it is important to mention that both of these parameters are entered with a reference image that contains the desired reference style or specific characteristic of the object. Stylistic and reference characters are best transmitted to Midjourney if the reference image was previously created in Midjourney. You can also use an outsourced image from the internet or your own creation, but the results will not be as satisfactory.

How to get the URL of the reference image?

For an image generated in Midjourney, the procedure is as follows:

  • Click on the image > you will see a preview > right click > Copy Address Image > paste after ‐‐xref https://media.discordapp.net/
    attachments/125618…

For a picture from a computer (one of the variants):

  • Drag an image from a folder to a channel > send
  • Click on the image > you will see a preview > right click > Copy Address Image > paste after ‐‐xref https://media.discordapp.net/
    attachments/125618…

Character Reference (characterization) --cref URL1, URL2, …

For this parameter to work, it must be placed at the end after all other parameters.

Definition: Character Reference refers to specific characteristics, details and characteristics of e.g. a character to be created or included in a project. This includes physical features, clothing, accessories, facial expressions, etc.

Applies:

  • Appearance: Hair, eye color, height, body structure, etc.
  • Details: Specific elements such as scars, tattoos, specific clothing styles, or accessories.
  • Behavior: It can also transmit basic character traits that will be reflected in facial expressions or postures.

Style Reference (stylization) --cref URL1, URL2, …

Definition: Style Reference focuses on the overall artistic style and aesthetics of the image to be applied to your creation. This includes the use of specific techniques, color palettes, textures, and other artistic elements.

Applies:

  • Art style: It can transmit various artistic movements like surrealism, cubism, manga, noir, etc.
  • Techniques: Use of specific techniques such as watercolor, oil painting, digital drawing, etc.
  • Atmosphere: Conveying a specific atmosphere or mood, such as dark and mysterious, bright and cheerful, futuristic, etc.

How to adjust the degree of imitation of reference images?

For both of these parameters, you can specify the degree to which the reference image or style is imitated, depending on the preferences you want.

Style Weight (Degree of stylization)

‐‐sw <0-1000>

  • Degree of imitation of the reference image style
  • Default setting is 100

Prompt:  /imagine prompt golden astronaut ‐‐ar 16:9 ‐‐sw 10 ‐‐sref https://s.mj.run/UjtUUxapecI

Prompt: /imagine prompt  golden astronaut ‐‐ar 16:9 ‐‐sw 10 ‐‐sref https://s.mj.run/UjtUUxapecI

Character Weight (Degree of imitation) --cw

  • Rate of imitation of the reference object
  • Lower values focus on the face, higher values focus on other aspects of the reference image
  • Default setting is 100

Example: /imagine prompt golden astronaut ‐‐ar 16:9 ‐‐cw 10 ‐‐cref https://s.mj.run/C9chYEgUVCc

Example: /imagine prompt golden astronaut ‐‐ar 16:9 ‐‐cw 100 ‐‐cref https://s.mj.run/C9chYEgUVCc

Of course, these parameters can also be combined with each other to achieve unusual and even more original results.

Example:

 /imagine prompt golden astronaut ‐‐ar 16:9 ‐‐cw 100 ‐‐sw 1000 ‐‐sref https://s.mj.run/UjtUUxapecI –cref https://s.mj.run/C9chYEgUVCc
